Riots in Pittsburgh

Here is sgtrob88 commenting on a youtube video of police tear-gassing students at the University of Pittsburgh:

I would imagine 75% or more of these kids are liberal, yet going through this will probably not dissuade any of them of the notion that over-sized government is BAD. Like their hippy parents they will continue to allow government to increase in size and power all in the name of "caring for the little guy," while ignoring their own experiences in governmental abuse. While corporations are no saints, government is the one able to beat your ass and get away with it.

Makes sense to me, except we need to differentiate between government actions that have the power to harm citizens (police, unnecessary laws, etc.) and government actions that can protect the public (public defenders, VA hospitals, etc.). Of course, since few people will agree on which government actions will either harm or protect the public, it seems appropriate to have a bias against broad laws or power of any kind.

Bottom line about the way I think: we are born the same, but create patterns over time based on our lives that make an open mind less of a possibility. The key is to try to place yourself in different situations as much as possible to shock your system and force it to think differently; otherwise, the brain's natural course will be to calcify the patterns it picks up from limited local experience and the media, instead of reality.

i would have to agree with both of you.

i'm all for the police and i have the highest respect for 99% of them. but just like most things in life it is the bad apples that will always stick out the most.

we hear about it every day where a cop fires a taser as some innocent man/woman who is sleeping/taking a shower etc etc etc. the stories are different every time but the idea is the same, cops abusing their power.

while at the same time though we don't hear about the officers who serve are communities well (99% of them)

the same thing goes for so many other things in life. athletes, business man, politicians, teachers, religious people, our armed forces, parents etc etc. I could go on and on. 99% of them (us)do the right things. but that 1 bad % gets 99% of the news coverage.

i certainly respect the police. i can't even imagine doing what they do, and there definitely was window breaking and some crazy rioting.

However, I personally witnessed situations where police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at college students that weren't causing trouble and weren't even protesting.

I mean canisters of tear gas were thrown onto people's personal balconies, which is uncalled for.

Too much Force?
Rioters throwing rocks at the police who are charged with the task of keeping peace.
Too much Force?
Rioters damaging private property, breaking windows, setting fires, turning over cars.
Too much Force?
Imagine standing in a street with the threat of being surrounded by people with clubs, throwing rocks at you.
Too much Force?
The network media has for over 40 years been building on the image of police authority as racist, corrupt and brutal. So much so that the police in the daily course of enforcing laws do so without the respect of the average citizen. Not even respecting that they are in harms-way every second they set foot on the street.
Too much Force?
My, my; my work environment is quite comfortable. I can't recall the last time someone was shooting at me or even throwing rocks in my direction.
Too Much Force!

very good point. i live in pittsburgh and saw the madness. the police definitely acted with too much force in some cases.

People can made about the government "controlling" them here, but they are ok with the government controlling healthcare? or taking their money and choosing what to use it for?

Random Market Definition

Gross Revenue Pledge
Like most restrictive provisions in a bond indenture, a gross revenue pledge makes the debt issue safer for bondholders. The bondholders do not have to worry about the municipality potentially misusing revenues that should have been used to pay debt~servicing costs. Generally, the added safety created by the gross revenue is a cause for the bond issue to be offered at a lower interest rate.
